Brian and Sheilah Clouston started the business in 1980, their son Tom and his wife Sally then came on board, and they still own the business today. Tom and Sally's youngest son Jack is now the General Manager of C & H and is the fifth generation of Clouston men in the book trade.
With Cloustons being in the trade since the late 1800s they really know their stuff. We have seen many changes including the introduction of ISBNs and the new electronic form of books available on e-readers.
Clouston and Hall sell real books on real subjects for real readers, so if you are into anthropology and sociology, art and architecture, biographies, children’s books, craft, cooking and culinary arts, economics and business, education, gardening, geography and geology, government and politics, history, hobbies and do-it-yourself, language and literature, maths and computers, militaria, music philosophy, law and religion, psychology reference books, science and the environment, self-help and health, sport, stationary and gifts, travel or women’s studies then we have the book for you.
Our distribution warehouse in Fyshwick is open to the public as a retail outlet seven days a week with over 10,000 titles in stock, so you are bound to find a book that will stimulate your mind or provide you with hours of pleasure. We also have a shop at 20 Garema Place, Canberra City, and although it is not as big as the warehouse the quality of the stock and the bargains are just the same.
A book is "remaindered" when its publisher judges that its sales velocity has slowed to a point where it is no longer viable to keep the book in stock, and sells it off to the likes of us. We scour the globe for remainders, and then list them in our catalogues, the majority of the books we import have never been released in Australia so although they are remaindered they are new to Australia. We then print and mail the catalogue every four weeks. If you would like to receive our printed catalogues, please email us at info@cloustonandhall.com.au with your name and address. At any time we have two "live" catalogues, and the books in each are different. These are now on this web page, which you can browse by going to www.cloustonandhall.com.au and clicking on "SHOPPING". As well, we sometimes have "Special Selection" catalogues on a particular subject. If we have one of these you will see a "Special Selection" link on the SHOPPING page. Just click on the link and you will be taken straight to the catalogue.
Remember that all our remaindered titles are at least 50% of the published price with many books up to 90% off.
Our books are usually much better priced that Borders, Angus and Robinson, Booktopia and even Amazon and Book Depository.
